Getting Started with Homeopathy
What is Homeopathy?
Homeopathy is a system of natural medicine introduced and developed by a German physician, Samuel Hahnemann, at the end of the 18th century. Recognizing that the whole person-mind, body, spirit-is affected when there is illness, homeopathy seeks to treat that whole person. The focus is not the diseased part or the sickness, rather the totality of the individual.
Homeopathic medicines, or ‘remedies’, stimulate the body’s self-regulating mechanisms to initiate the healing process. The cornerstone principle of Homeopathy is Similia Similbus Curentur, or “Let likes cure likes.” Through research and practice, Hahnemann verified cure through the use of similars.
A substance that can produce disease in a healthy person is used to elicit a healing response in someone presenting with a similar disease. Each person shows symptoms of the body/mind/spirit when they are sick. Some of these symptoms are common to that sickness, others are characteristic of that person in their sickness.
The homeopathic practitioner matches the symptom picture of the homeopathic remedy to the symptom picture of the person, with particular attention paid to those symptoms which are unique to the individual.
Frequently Asked Questions
The Homeopathic Consultation
An interview with a classical homeopath takes anywhere from 20 minutes to 2 hours, depending on if your complaint is acute or chronic, and if it is your initial appointment, or a follow-up. You will be asked in detail about your main complaint(s), your physical, mental and emotional health, your health history and yourself in general!
In some cases, a homeopathic remedy will be given to you immediately, but more commonly, your homeopath will take additional time after your meeting to study your case and will provide you with a remedy at a later date.
Your homeopath will generally ask to see you 4-6 weeks after the initial appointment, and quarterly thereafter. Follow-up appointments are very important in order to assess your reaction to the homeopathic remedy and it’s effectiveness and to know how often to repeat or alter your remedy.
What is a Homeopathic remedy?
Homeopathic remedies are derived from substances that come from plants, minerals, or animals. Each remedy is prepared by a homeopathic pharmacy in compliance with the Homoeopathic Pharmacopoea. The substance taken from nature is then processed through a series of dilution and succussion. Homeopathic remedies are often formulated as a liquid and then further administered on lactose sugar pellets. The sugar pellet is then taken under the tongue; homeopathic remedies may also be prepared in other forms, such as ointments, gels, drops, creams, and tablets.
